Software Group Suggests |
|
| Refactoring by Martin Fowler, Kent Beck, John Brant, William Opdyke, Don Roberts |
The Mythical Man-Month by Frederick P. Brooks, Jr. |
| Debugging the Development Process by Steve Maguire |
Extreme Programming by Kent Beck |
| Practical Software Requirements by Benjamin L. Kovitz Practical Software Requirements: Brenda raves about this book; Ethan thinks he'd be bored because he knows this stuff already. I'd like to have an expert present to elucidate what the rest of us don't realize about it. |
The Cathedral and the Bazaar by Eric S. Raymond Cathedral and the Bazzar: We had some discussion of this on the email group, and I would like to know what some of the unstated prejudice positions are of the participants: clearly, this reminded people of a lot they've already argued about. Good discussion material, therefore, even if it's crapola. |
| The Psychology of Computer Programming by Gerald Weinberg The Psychology of Computer Programming: Since we're all insane, it might be very entertaining. |
Peopleware by De Marco and Lister Peopleware: I've been hearing people radiantly recommend this book for 10 years. Either it's good, or it's printed on paper impregnated with a stimulant. Either way, I want to get my hands on it. |
| The Mind of the Maker by Dorothy Sayers The Mind of the Maker: This book shows little or no possibility of being related to software engineering, but Dorothy Sayers - Wow. This would be an awesome break from the monotony, eh? |
Object-Oriented Analysis by De Marco and Lister Object-Oriented Analysis: This book is clearly totally software-engineering-centric to a degree that it would chase Ethan away. I don't think we'll ever select it, but it's probably a good one to read anyway. I'm sure going to read it. Then again, I already paid my $65 for it. |
| Design Patterns by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, John Vlissides, Grady Booch Design Patterns: This is also likely to be too deeply SE-oriented for Ethan to want to read; it also looks like a worthwhile experience. |
Software Project Survival Guide by Steve McConnell Software Project Survival Guide: Many of us would like to survive software projects, so this clearly has some potential. |
| Code Complete by Steve McConnell Code Complete: In informal discussion, we seem to have concluded that this book's appeal is narrow enough that more than Ethan would drop out for a discussion of this one; but if you're going to buy it anyhow, buy it here. |
Rapid Development by Steve McConnell Rapid Development: Taming Wild Software Schedules: What, is Steve McConnell somebody's cousin or something? Or does he write for Microsoft press and offer kickbacks? This looks like it may be useful to read. Any other opinions? |
